the digital divide project

Overview

The Digital Divide Project is a community access and education initiative designed to address digital inequities affecting students in underserved communities, including Black, Latino, low-income, and rural populations. The project uses esports and gaming as an entry point to build digital literacy, STEM exposure, and long-term career pathways in a technology-driven economy.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with Ahman Green and aligned with higher education, K–12 partners, and community organizations.

My Role

Grant Writing, Program Strategy & Narrative Development

I was the primary author of the project document and contributed to:

  • Writing the full vision, executive summary, and program narrative

  • Translating lived experience and research into a grant-ready proposal

  • Designing the program structure, goals, and implementation strategy

  • Framing esports as a gateway to STEM education and digital careers

  • Defining evaluation methods, timelines, and operating budget context

the problem

Many students lack consistent access to computers, broadband, and early exposure to technology. This gap limits educational opportunity and contributes to persistent underrepresentation in STEM fields. Research cited in the proposal highlights significant disparities in device ownership, internet access, and STEM participation across income and racial groups

the solution

The Digital Divide Project proposes a multi-layered program model that combines access, education, and community engagement:

  • A central esports and learning facility at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln

  • Community-based Technology Hubs serving K–12 students

  • Digital literacy and digital citizenship curriculum

  • Summer gaming and STEM camps

  • Partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and industry leaders

The program integrates on-screen gameplay with off-screen learning, connecting gaming to skills in coding, data analysis, strategy, design, journalism, and technology careers.
